What Heat Pumps Do and How They Work
Heat pumps are versatile and energy-efficient systems used for both heating and cooling residential and commercial spaces. At their core, heat pump equipment transfers heat rather than generating it. During the winter months, the system extracts heat from the outside air or ground and brings it inside to warm the building.
Conversely, in the summer, it reverses this process, removing heat from the interior and releasing it outside. This dual functionality makes heat pump equipment an attractive option for year-round climate control.
The operation of heat pump equipment relies on a refrigeration cycle similar to that used in air conditioners and refrigerators. This cycle involves a refrigerant fluid that circulates through coils inside and outside the building. As the refrigerant absorbs heat from the air or ground, it changes from a liquid to a gas. The heat pump then compresses this gas, increasing its temperature before releasing it into the indoor space. In cooling mode, the process is reversed, with the refrigerant absorbing heat from inside the building and expelling it outside.
One of the significant advantages of heat pump equipment is its energy efficiency. By transferring heat rather than generating it through combustion, heat pumps can achieve significantly higher efficiency levels compared to traditional heating systems. This efficiency translates into lower energy bills and a reduced environmental footprint.
